Startr: Procrastination app

Startr is a procrastination app for the one thing you keep putting off. Tell it the task, and it writes a first step you can finish in two minutes, gives you a time and a place, counts you down 3-2-1 and starts a timer.

The problem

To-do apps make it easy to plan and hard to start. Most procrastination is waiting for a moment that feels right, and another list just gives you somewhere else to hide.

What we built

Each day follows five short stages:

  1. Dream: pick one thing, not a list.
  2. Commit: sign your name under it. A signed promise is harder to wriggle out of.
  3. Plan (60 s): a rough two-minute first step, a time and a place. Capped so planning can't become stalling.
  4. Do: a 3-2-1 countdown and a five-minute timer that can't be paused.
  5. Review (30 s): did you start, what got in the way, and tomorrow's step.

A “stuck” button gives you something that takes a minute, then you start.

Decisions that mattered

Measure start delay. Startr tracks the minutes between when you planned to start and when you did, so you can watch it shrink.

Missed days don't reset you. A gap is logged, not punished.

Free tools first. A free first-step generator and Pomodoro timer help people before they ever install.

Platforms

iPhone and Apple Watch, Android and Wear OS, and a web app, with reminders, a home-screen widget and the timer on your wrist. You can also reach Startr at the short address startr.si.
