Skinify case study: AI skin age test from one selfie

Skinify answers a simple question: how old does my skin look? You take one selfie, and Skinify estimates your skin age, puts it next to your real age, and scores seven skin factors out of 100. It was one of rrdl's first featured projects, and it is still one of our favourites.

The problem

Skincare advice is everywhere, and most of it is generic. People wanted a starting point that was about their skin: what to work on first, and whether a routine is actually helping over time.

What we built

A one-selfie scan. The front camera checks that one face is clearly in frame, then the AI reads visible signs on the skin surface: fine lines, texture, dark spots, pores and redness.
Seven scores. Acne, redness, dark spots, pores, texture, wrinkles and hydration, each from 0 to 100, plus skin type, an overall score and a confidence level.
Progress over time. Each scan adds a point to a skin score chart, and Skinify follows the trend rather than one unusual photo.
A routine you tick off. Results turn into a short morning and night routine: cleanse, treat, moisturise, protect.

Decisions that mattered

Be clear about what the AI can't see. Skinify can't see beneath the skin or know your medical history, and the product says so. The result is described as how your skin looks, a cosmetic estimate, never a diagnosis. Good lighting guidance (daylight, no makeup, no glasses) and a visible confidence score keep expectations honest.

Treat photos as private. Selfies are used only for the analysis, stored with the scan, never used to train models or shared with advertisers, and deleted with the scan or the account.

Make the free scan useful. The first scan is free so anyone can try it before paying for Premium's full results and extra scans.
